Authors. What is Your Story?

I was working with a marketer today who want help selling a book full of tips put together by another marketer hoping to tap into a rich market.

I asked “What is the story?"

We can market a book by and anonymous author.. we can sell a product that contains 102 great tips.. but everything will work better when we establish a story.  Not the story in the book, the story of the author and the reason for the book. That’s a major part of what people buy. Readers want to hear, emulate, or even become part of your story.

The story may be a myth.. but must be true to itself, honest and authentic for the market (readers) you want to reach.

This is one of the many reasons to use a story. Watch this short video and let me know if you agree that life is the story we make it.

Too many of today's business publication have drifted into the “softer” side of management, and as a result, many of our business leaders have become nothing more than “budgeters” and “score keepers.” The results of this dilemma has been evidenced by the collapse of our automobile industry, and the constant turnover of middle managers who no longer have a clue as to what they need to do sustain their business operations. It is for this reason that I wrote “Targeted Tactics – Transforming Strategy into Measurable Results.” If you are looking for the “How To” manual, read this book.

if your story is “Everyone else if wrong, read my book” I'll pass. A good story is a personal statement o how you came to know your mission

“mass emailing” reads as “SPAM” to me. I email to lots of people, but never think of them a s a mass. I don't approved of spam or intrusion marketing.

We help authors attract the reader who are already looking for them.

Hardly, I am not that arrogant. I wrote it for a wonderful group of young professionals who were concerned about the future of their careers. As organizations continue to “flatten out” their middle management ranks, a great deal of intellectual capital is leaving these firms. I wrote the book as a guide to help those left behind navigate through the changes is their market environments without the benefit of much direction.

This paragraph is much more of what I would call a good authors story. (I knew you'd have it.. was just coaxing it out of you).

One thing I'd change.. most authors focus on the book as if getting that read is their whole mission. The smart ones (I sense that's you) learn to talk in terms of their mission beyond the book (yes, 'mission' is a bit 'soft' of a word.. maybe I should say “THINK BIG”)

My mission is somewhat obvious. We have lost 7.2 million jobs over the last wo and one half years. A portion of this is the result of “bad habits” we have adopted in the management of our institutions. Adding x % to last years performance is hardly business planning; paying attention to the changing competitive environment, the global economy, and advancements in technology is a more desireable path for success. Emphasizing the value of the later alternative is what my publication is all about. Anyone can cut cost; it takes real talent to build an enterprise. Since I was criticizing the “budgeting” approach, I felt obligated to provide an alternative. Targeted Tactics was born!

interesting.. if it's obvious, is there a need for it? 🙂

Is Target Tactice just a book, or something bigger?

It's actualyy bigger…it is becoming a model for tactical market planning. I have evolved a seminar from its content, and use it as an introduction for my consulting practice. The feedback has been strong, as evidenced by the testimonials at my websight. Once individuals work through its content, they gain confidence about how to approach their responsibilities. I'm not trying to change the world, just improve it. If we do not integrate market awareness into out business planning processes we will lose more and more of our economy to new global interests. Kind of a wake up call.
